How do moving companies charge for packing boxes?

How do movers charge for packing boxes when I move? Is box packing service charged by the box? Please tell me what you know. - Bobbi

Thanks for your great question. Different moving companies have different methods for charging their customers for packing contents (dishes, lamps, mirrors, pictures, linens, books, etc.)  into boxes and containers...

  1. Most professional movers charge by the box, and they have a charge for the box (and packing materials) and a separate charge for the labor to pack the box. For example, a mover may charge $15.00 for a "dish pack" box (which includes the tape, paper and/or protective materials needed to pack that box) and the also charges $25.00 for the labor to pack each "dish pack" box. Therefore, the total charge would be $40.00 to pack each "dish pack" box.
  2. Alternatively, the mover may combine the charge for the box (and the tape, paper and/or protective materials needed to pack that box) and the labor to pack the box into a single charge. In these instances (and using the above example) the mover would charge a single fee of $40.00 to pack each "dish pack" box.
  3. There are also some movers who charge for the the box (and the tape, paper and/or protective materials needed to pack that box) but then charge an hourly labor fee to pack the box. In these instances the move may charge $15.00 for a single dish pack and an hourly labor rate of $42.00 per hour to pack the box.

Some customers are miffed by the cost to have the mover pack boxes, but what these customers may not realize is that when the mover packs a box the mover becomes responsible for damage to the contents of the mover packed box (but only responsible according to the type of insurance the customer has purchased from the mover). Alternatively, if the customer packs the box -- and the contents of the box is broken during the move -- the mover will decline responsibility for that damage. Therefore, when you have your mover pack boxes you are also making the mover responsible for damage to the contents of the mover pack boxes (according to the type of insurance you purchase from the mover).

I hope this answers your question...but if you require additional information please don't hesitate to contact us.

And thank you again for your excellent question!
